United Way of Wayne County Mobilizes Emergency Food Support for SNAP Recipients

ALTA Foods Leads $5,000 Challenge Campaign Amid Federal Shutdown Uncertainty

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — United Way of Wayne County is launching an emergency fundraising initiative to support local families receiving SNAP benefits who may face interruptions due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The relief effort comes as concerns mount over potential disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides critical food assistance to thousands of Wayne County residents.

Local Business Steps Up with Major Donation

ALTA Foods has committed $5,000 to jumpstart the relief effort, with funds designated specifically for SNAP recipients through United Way’s UCAN (United Community Assistance Network) program. The company is also challenging other local businesses and community members to match their contribution.

“Our community is understandably anxious about the possibility of SNAP benefits being paused,” said Sherry Archibald, Executive Director of United Way of Wayne County. “We are deeply grateful to ALTA Foods for leading the way and challenging others to take action. Together, we can ensure that our neighbors don’t go without food during this uncertain time.”

How the UCAN Program Will Help

United Way’s UCAN program connects individuals and families in crisis with essential resources, including emergency food support. Funds donated specifically for SNAP relief will be used to provide food assistance to verified SNAP recipients affected by the shutdown.

The organization plans to collect donations for a brief period and will announce the application process for recipients next week through its social media channels.

How to Contribute

Community members who wish to support the effort can donate in two ways:

  • Online: Visit www.unitedwayne.org
  • By mail: Send checks to United Way of Wayne County, 309 N. William St., with “UCAN – SNAP” in the memo line

Archibald acknowledged that the request comes during the organization’s regular Community Campaign season. “We know many of our investors are already generously supporting our Community Campaign. Thank you for all you do to keep Wayne County strong and for considering this additional emergency need,” she said.
