Jo Ann Medlin, 76, passed away peacefully at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Born in Wilson County on November 6, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Batten and Gladie Boykin Batten.
In addition to her parents, Jo Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Medlin; son, Bernie Medlin, Jr.; grandmother, Effie Boykin; and brother-in-law, Wayne Little.
Jo Ann is survived by her siblings, Linda Little, Ernie Batten and wife, Kathy, and Angie Batten; and nephew, Brad Batten and fiancée, Bailey.
Jo Ann dedicated many years of service as an administrative assistant with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, where she was known for her professionalism, warmth, and steadfast dedication. Her colleagues respected her for her attention to detail and her kind, steady spirit that brightened the workplace.
She and her husband were longtime members of the Moose Lodge, where they formed many lasting friendships and shared countless wonderful memories. Whether helping with community events or enjoying evenings among friends, Jo Ann’s cheerful presence and generous heart made everyone feel welcome.
At home, Jo Ann found joy in tending her flowers and gardens. She had a true green thumb and took great pride in creating a beautiful yard full of color and life. Her love for the outdoors and her ability to make things grow were admired by all who knew her.
A graveside service to celebrate Jo Ann’s life will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025 at the Raper Cemetery on NC 42 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dennis Pollock presiding. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield, 426 Hospital Rd, Smithfield, NC 27577 in memory of Jo Ann.
