GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne Community College will host a comprehensive Reentry Employment and Training Summit on October 29, offering justice-involved individuals a pathway back into the workforce through skills training, employer connections, and professional development resources.
The event, organized by the Wayne County Reentry Council with WCC serving as the intermediary agency, aims to bridge the gap between formerly incarcerated individuals and second-chance employers committed to providing meaningful employment opportunities.
Day-Long Programming Offers Comprehensive Support
The summit kicks off at 11 a.m. with a three-hour training session in Room 101 of the Walnut Building on WCC’s campus. Participants will engage in workshops covering career exploration, resume writing, job application strategies, and mock interviews. A “Dress for Success” mobile unit will be available on-site to provide appropriate interview attire.
Programming continues from 2–3 p.m. in the Wayne Learning Center with an informational session on federal bonding, followed by a panel discussion featuring second-chance employers and a reentry participant who can share firsthand experiences.
The summit concludes with a job fair from 3–5 p.m., where attendees can connect directly with local employers ready to offer second-chance opportunities.
Breaking Down Barriers to Employment
“It’s vital to provide career resources for justice-impacted individuals so they can successfully transition back into the community and contribute in meaningful ways,” said Renita Dawson, WCC Vice President of Workforce Continuing Education Services and Community Engagement.
Dawson emphasized that meaningful employment serves as a critical tool in reducing recidivism while strengthening communities. “There are many talented individuals who simply need a second chance to prove themselves,” she said. “Through this summit, we hope to connect these individuals with employers who are committed to being second-chance champions—creating a space where opportunity and readiness meet.”
The Wayne County Reentry Council provides education, employment services, and essential resources to support formerly incarcerated individuals as they reintegrate into society.
