Dorothy Whitman Hardy Mendiola, 92, resident of the Kinston area, passed away Sunday night, September 28, 2025, at her home.
Dorothy was a native of the Brock’s Chapel community near Mount Olive,and was daughter of the late Rob and Ethel Whitman
She had been employed as a seamstress at Albaine’s Shirt Factory in Kinston, and later at Young Squire Industries in Mount Olive. Dorothy worshipped with the congregation at Walnut Creek Original Free Will Baptist Church near La Grange.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Timmy Jones of Dover; her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Kathie Davis of Kinston; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Dixie Whitman of Brunswick, Georgia; another sister-in-law, Bertie Faye Whitman of Mount Olive; grandchildren, Steven Wayne Jones of Dover, Shannon Nicole Deaver and husband, Jerry, of Kinston, and April Michele Davis of New York; two great-grandchildren, Ethan Gabriel Lane and Taylor McKenzie Lane, both of Kinston; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Jesse Ray Davis, William Hardy, and Andy Mendiola; a fiance, Earl Garris; a brother, Ernest Whitman; and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert Whitman, Jr. and Ernestine Whitman.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 2, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. Officiating will be the Rev. Don Fleming. Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home, and at other times, family and friends are welcome to call at Dorothy’s home. A private entombment will be in the Whitman Family Cemetery.
Dorothy’s family will be forever grateful to Cardinal Home Health and Hospice for the love, care, and compassion they extended to them and to their loved one.
