NCDOT Reports Major Hurricane Helene Recovery Progress as New Transit and Safety Initiatives Launch

RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced significant milestones in Hurricane Helene recovery efforts this week, while simultaneously launching new public transit services and safety campaigns across the state.

Hurricane Helene Recovery Reaches 98% Completion

Nearly one year after Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, NCDOT officials report that 98% of closed roads have been successfully reopened. The storm, which caused an estimated $5 billion in damage to state-maintained infrastructure, has been declared the most destructive in North Carolina’s history.

The massive recovery operation has become NCDOT’s top priority, resulting in completed work at more than 6,500 damaged sites and repairs to over 500 bridges throughout the affected region.

McDowell County Launches On-Demand Transit Service

In rural McDowell County, a new micro transit program called McDowell Express is connecting residents with essential services. The on-demand public transit service, which launched in May, has already provided more than 1,900 rides to community members seeking access to jobs, healthcare, and educational opportunities.

The service has shown consistent monthly growth since its inception. Residents and visitors can access the program through the CTS Trip Portal mobile app. Additional information is available at ncdot.gov by searching “micro-transit.”

Child Passenger Safety Week Addresses Installation Concerns

The Governor’s Highway Safety Program launched Child Passenger Safety Week on Monday in Morrisville, partnering with local organizations to address a critical safety issue. The campaign provides free car seats and professional installation assistance to families and caregivers throughout the state.

The initiative comes in response to alarming statistics showing that 8 out of every 10 child safety seats are installed incorrectly. Families can locate certified car seat checking stations near them by visiting buckleupnc.org.
