Mrs. Dororthy Artis Grantham was born on December 26, 1942 in Wayne County, North Carolina to the late James Artis Jr. and Queenie Edmondson Artis.
She peacefully departed this earthly life on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 surrounded by her dedicated and loving family. Dororthy was preceded in death by her parents, James and Queenie Artis; her husband, Leonard E. Grantham; her sisters, Hazel A. Whitley, and Lucy A. Williams and her brothers, Vernis Artis, Robert Artis, Larry Artis and Lacy Artis.
Dorothy attended the Wayne County schools in which she was a member of the Norwayne High School, Class of 1961.
On February 2, 1972, she married Leonard E. Grantham, from this union, God blessed them with four children, Vernell, Judy, Terry and Anthony.
In her early years, she was employed at Wayne Mfg. in Goldsboro, NC and with the Wayne County public school system as a bus driver and a cafeteria worker until her retirement.
She was a member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Fremont, NC where she sang in the choir for many years. She served as a Mother at Abundant Grace Ministry in Wilson, North Carolina where she faithfully attended until her health declined.
Dororthy leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories to her two daughters, Terry Grantham of the home and Judy Barnes of Wilson, NC; two sons, Vernell Grantham of Goldsboro, NC, Anthony (Angeline) Grantham of Pikeville, NC; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Samuel Artis (Elaine) of Dudley, NC; four sisters-in-law, Etheline Artis of GA, Peggy Bryant of Greenville, NC and Mozella Grantham of Pikeville, NC and Gloria Artis of Pikeville, NC; two brothers-in-law, James Grantham (Geraldine) of Washington, DC and William Whitley; her best friend, Zola Johnson of Pikeville, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mrs. Patton, RN and the staff of DaVita of Rosewood, Dr. Dugon and the staff at Goldsboro Medical Center, CenterWell Home Health and MedEx Transportation.
Homegoing service will be held Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at The Throne Room Elm Grove Church Ministries in Pikeville. Interment will follow at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Fremont. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Elm Grove Church.
