August 29, 2025, 35, Goldsboro —
It is with profound sadness and enduring love that we announce the passing of Shawdae Estavon Pinkney, a devoted mother, beloved daughter, cherished sister, treasured aunt, and dear friend to many. Shawdae passed away leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Shawdae passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025 at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.
Shawdae is survived by her loving sons, Romeo Hickson and Remi Bolden; mother, Angela F. Burney and husband, Chris; father, Garland C. Pinkney and wife, Jetta; grandmother, Mary Pinkney; sisters, Michelle Smith, Candace Smith (Jesse Forbes), and Kwadaisa Pinkney; step-sisters, Benazha Dozier, Kierra Burney, and Dalesja Kornegay; step-brother, McKinley Lyons; uncle, Billy D. Williams; and several beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
As a mother, Shawdae embodied selflessness and love. She poured her heart into raising her two sons, giving them not just her time, but her energy, joy, and fierce determination. A single mother, Shawdae made extraordinary memories with her boys—taking special trips like their unforgettable adventure to Disney World. She ensured they were always well cared for, well dressed, and deeply loved. No challenge could stand in her way; if ever there was a “no,” Shawdae would find a “yes”—she always made a way out of no way.
A gifted and passionate hairdresser, Shawdae built lasting relationships with her clients, who quickly became more like extended family. Her warmth and care touched so many—clients would often return that love by helping with meals for her boys or simply being a support system. Her chair was not just a place for beauty, but for connection, laughter, and healing.
Shawdae’s church family held a special place in her heart, and they continue to honor her legacy by supporting her sons spiritually, emotionally, and financially. Their unwavering presence speaks volumes about the love she gave and received.
As a daughter, Shawdae showed her love in heartfelt and creative ways—writing poems, making photo albums, and cooking meals with warmth and care. Tacos were among her favorites to prepare and share.
In her role as the eldest sister, Shawdae was a role model in every sense. She was the first to learn how to braid hair and taught her younger sisters through laughter and practice. She began working at just 15 years old, showing an early determination that would inspire her siblings for years to come.
Shawdae was a deeply involved and loving aunt, always ready to babysit, plan trips to the park, or treat her nieces and nephews to a meal out. She made each child feel seen and special.
Her academic achievements were equally inspiring. As the first in her family to graduate from college, Shawdae blazed a trail for her younger siblings. She earned a degree in Public Health from North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where she spent four transformative years building lifelong friendships and growing as a leader.
A woman of many talents, Shawdae had a bold and unique sense of fashion. She styled herself, her sons, and her sisters with creativity and flair. She was also incredibly athletic, having run track, played basketball, and even performed in the band as a flutist.
Shawdae’s life was filled with purpose, love, and a tireless spirit. She was a woman who gave her all—for her family, her friends, and her community. Her light continues to shine in the hearts of those who knew her, especially in the lives of her beloved sons, who carry forward her strength, her kindness, and her incredible legacy.
