Wayne Community College to Host Annual 9/11 Tribute Stair Climb

GOLDSBORO, N.C. – Wayne Community College will honor the memory of fallen first responders with its annual 9/11 Tribute Stair Climb on Thursday, September 11, marking the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

The commemorative event, organized by WCC’s Public Safety Division, will begin at 9 a.m. on the exterior stairs and breezeways of the Magnolia Building at the college’s main campus located at 3000 Wayne Memorial Drive in Goldsboro.

Students enrolled in the college’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and Emergency Medical Services programs will join local first responders in climbing the equivalent of 78 flights of stairs. The challenging physical tribute replicates the heroic efforts of firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, climbing to the 78th floor—the highest level reached in the south tower before its collapse.

The stair climb serves as a solemn reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by 403 public safety personnel who died in the line of duty that tragic day. Among those honored are 343 New York City Fire Department firefighters, 23 New York City Police Department officers, and 37 Port Authority Police Department officers who lost their lives while attempting to save others.

The public is invited to attend the tribute and show support for participants as they complete this memorial challenge. The event highlights the ongoing commitment of current and future first responders to serve and protect their communities.

Wayne Community College encourages participation from individuals with disabilities in all its programs and activities. Those anticipating the need for accommodations or who have questions about accessibility can contact the college’s Accessibility Counselor at 919-739-6729.

The annual tribute continues WCC’s tradition of honoring the heroes of 9/11 while providing students in public safety programs with a meaningful way to connect with the legacy of service and sacrifice that defines their chosen professions.
