NCDOT Launches New Intercity Bus Service in Chapel Hill

New Service Begins Operations

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has launched a new intercity bus service in Chapel Hill, with operations beginning August 1st at the Eubanks Road Park and Ride Lot. The service, operated by Greyhound under contract with NCDOT, provides four daily departures and arrivals, offering residents and students enhanced transportation options to destinations across the state and beyond.

Strategic Partnership Enhances Regional Access

The new bus stop represents a collaborative effort between NCDOT’s Integrated Mobility Division (IMD), the Town of Chapel Hill, and Greyhound. The timing coincides strategically with the return of thousands of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students for the fall semester.

“NCDOT understands the importance of affordable, flexible, and reliable transportation for everyone, and NCDOT’s intercity bus service plays a vital role of connecting communities of all sizes,” said Brennon Fuqua, Director of NCDOT’s Integrated Mobility Division.

Extensive Route Network Available

The statewide program connects Chapel Hill to major regional and national destinations, including:

  • Greensboro
  • Winston-Salem
  • Charlotte
  • Raleigh
  • Richmond
  • Washington, D.C.
  • New York City

This comprehensive network provides convenient scheduling designed to facilitate connections across multiple transportation corridors.

Local Officials Welcome Enhanced Transit Options

Chapel Hill Transit Director Brian Litchfield expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting the integration of the Eubanks Park and Ride facility into the broader transportation network.

“We’re excited to share our Eubanks Park and Ride stop with FlixBus and Greyhound and partner with the NCDOT to improve access to intercity bus services,” Litchfield said. “By integrating our stop into their network, it gives Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the UNC-Chapel Hill communities more ways to stay connected throughout the state and larger region.”

Industry Partnership Expands Service Reach

Karina Frayter, head of communications at Flix North America, emphasized the service’s potential impact on the university community and local residents.

“Relaunching intercity bus service in Chapel Hill will make it easier than ever for UNC students, faculty, staff, and town residents to travel across North Carolina and beyond,” Frayter said. “Reliable, affordable, and convenient transportation is a gateway to education, jobs, and essential services — and we’re proud to help expand those opportunities for the Chapel Hill community.”
