Triangle Expressway Extension Wins Regional Transportation Award for Innovative Technology

RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Turnpike Authority has received regional recognition for the Triangle Expressway extension project, which was selected by the Southern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO) for its innovative use of technology and community impact.

The Triangle Expressway extension is among 113 nominations from 35 state departments of transportation competing in this year’s America’s Transportation Awards, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The program recognizes transportation projects that deliver meaningful benefits to their communities.

Innovation Drives Efficiency and Environmental Benefits

“Innovation for us means fewer dollars necessary for construction, fewer environmental impacts and more time back in lives of our drivers,” said James “JJ” Eden, Executive Director of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. “This project captures the best of what is possible in North Carolina – engineering expertise, technological innovations and real community partners.”

The project has garnered strong community support, with testimonials provided by the Johnston County Economic Development Office, Wake Tech Community College, Regional Transportation Alliance, and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization in support of the nomination.

Project Details and Impact

The southeast extension of the Triangle Expressway spans approximately 18 miles, connecting the existing corridor at N.C. 55 to I-40/U.S. 70 (future I-42). The roadway officially opened to traffic on September 25, 2024, following rigorous synchronization throughout the design and construction phases that enabled all 18 miles to open simultaneously.

The all-electronic toll road serves as transformative infrastructure designed to enhance mobility, reduce congestion, and support planned regional growth in the Raleigh area. It provides a seamless connection between southern Wake County and key transportation corridors, including I-40 and US 401.

Advanced Technology and Design Features

The project integrated several cutting-edge elements:

  • Innovative traffic management systems
  • Sustainable environmental solutions
  • Modern interchange designs to improve safety and efficiency
  • All-electronic tolling technology serving both local commuters and long-distance travelers

National Competition Ahead

By winning at the regional level, the Triangle Expressway extension will now advance to compete for a national award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, competing against other regional winners from across the country.
