After 25-Year Leadership Era Ends, Goldsboro Church Calls New Pastor

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — First Baptist Church of Goldsboro has selected Dr. Adam Street as its new senior pastor, ending a nearly two-year search following the retirement of Dr. Glenn Phillips Jr., who led the congregation for 25 years.

The congregation affirmed Dr. Street’s appointment on July 20, 2025, after he was presented by the Pastor Search Committee on June 29. The committee, chaired by Steve Mayo, conducted what officials described as a thorough and prayerful nine-month search process.

Experienced Ministry Leader Returns to Goldsboro

Dr. Street brings more than 23 years of pastoral experience to his new role. Most recently, he served as senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Cleveland, Texas. He previously ministered locally as senior pastor of Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Goldsboro for five years, giving him familiarity with the community.

Since 2020, Dr. Street has also served as a chaplain for the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, providing spiritual care to law enforcement officers and their families.

Educational Background and Ministry Focus

A native of Spindale in western North Carolina, Dr. Street was licensed to preach by Campfield Memorial Baptist Church in Ellenboro and ordained by Lee Road Baptist Church in Taylors, South Carolina. He holds a master’s degree and recently completed his Doctor of Ministry.

Church leaders emphasize Dr. Street’s commitment to discipleship, biblical teaching, and community engagement as key factors in his selection.

Family and Community Integration

Dr. Street and his wife Michelle, married for 17 years, have four children ages 12, 14, 15, and 16. The family is preparing to integrate into the First Baptist Church community.

“This is an exciting and hopeful time for our church,” said Deacon Chair Mary Emma Stevens.

Transition and Gratitude

The search committee expressed appreciation for the dedication shown throughout the selection process. “After approximately nine months of seeking God’s guidance and direction, the Pastor Search Committee was pleased to introduce Dr. Street and his family to the congregation,” Mayo said. “We look forward to his ministry and leadership.”

Church officials also acknowledged Interim Pastor Reverend Vernon Braswell, who provided leadership during the transition period. According to the congregation, his teaching and pastoral care helped prepare the way for Dr. Street’s arrival.

The pastoral transition marks a new chapter for First Baptist Church of Goldsboro as it moves forward under Dr. Street’s leadership, with an emphasis on growth and community service.
