July 13, 2025, 77, Goldsboro —
Janice Stump Mayo, 77, a devoted woman of faith and beloved matriarch, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at UNC Health in Chapel Hill. Born on July 16, 1947, in Wayne County, Janice was the daughter of the late Levi and Ruby Stump. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, E. Ray Mayo, and two brothers, Jimmy Stump and Larry Stump.
Janice was a faithful servant and a strong, gracious presence in every area of her life. Alongside her husband, she owned and operated North Carolina Manufacturing and M&M Industrial Supply in Goldsboro. After Ray’s passing, Janice continued to lead with purpose and excellence, serving as Chief Financial Officer and remaining a steady, trusted guide for the company and those it served.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. A longtime member of First Baptist Church in Goldsboro, Janice was actively involved in the life and ministry of the church. She was a dedicated member of the Lola Delbridge Sunday School Class and served faithfully on numerous committees, including the Finance Committee and the Endowment Board. Monthly lunches with her Sunday school class at Lane Tree were a highlight she treasured, as was every opportunity to fellowship and encourage others.
Above all else, Janice’s greatest joy was her family. She poured her heart into every moment spent with her children and her cherished granddaughter. She was the glue that held the family together—always present, always praying, and always loving. Her Saturday morning phone calls with her sisters were a sacred tradition, and her deep love for her extended family, including her dear cousin Claudette Buchan, was a constant in her life.
Janice also found peace and joy at the beach, where she marveled at God’s beauty in each sunset from her porch. Her eyes were always open to the wonder of His creation, and her heart always full of gratitude.
A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home. A graveside service celebrating Janice’s life and legacy will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Vernon Braswell officiating.
Janice is survived by her loving son, Steven Ray Mayo and wife, Tracy of Pikeville; daughter, Jennifer Karen Hardesty and husband, David of Asheboro; precious granddaughter, Scotlyn Rae Mayo; sisters, Sandy Cobb and Edie Turner; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Janice’s memory to First Baptist Church, 125 S. John Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service is honored to be serving the Mayo family.
