GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The Goldsboro Police Department has announced its intention to pursue $175,000 in federal grant funding through the 2025 Community Policing Development Microgrant Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Chief West confirmed that the department plans to request the full amount available under this opportunity, with no local matching funds required from the city.
Grant Will Fund Three Key Initiatives
Advanced Patrol Management System
The department plans to purchase and implement a resource router, described as a real-time data-driven patrol management and crime forecasting platform. This technology will improve officer deployment through precision-based patrol assignments and enhance visibility in high-crime areas.
License Plate Reader Technology
Grant funds will also support the acquisition of license plate reader equipment designed to aid in the identification of vehicles connected to criminal activity. This technology is expected to enhance investigative capabilities and help deter crime throughout the city.
Community Engagement Programs
The third component focuses on expanding community-oriented policing initiatives, including the growth of neighborhood watch groups and citizen-led safety initiatives. These programs aim to strengthen the partnership between police and residents in crime prevention efforts.
Building on Existing Technology
The new systems will complement the department’s current technology infrastructure, including the Sound Thinker ,a technological advancement already in use. According to Chief West, this integrated approach will continue the department’s transition from reactive to proactive policing methods.
The enhanced technology suite is designed to increase efficiency during unassigned patrol time by proactively guiding officers to areas where their presence is most needed, ultimately improving public safety outcomes citywide.
No Local Funding Required
The federal grant requires no matching funds from the city, making it a cost-effective opportunity for the department to modernize its crime prevention and community engagement capabilities.
The department expects to learn about the grant award status later this year, with implementation planned to begin upon approval.
