Durham Farm Celebrates 9 Years of Goat Yoga with Cuddle-Ready Nigerian Dwarf Goats

DURHAM, N.C. – What started as a unique twist on traditional yoga has become a beloved Durham tradition. Avery Family Farm is celebrating nine years of their popular goat yoga classes, where participants practice yoga surrounded by 23 specially-trained Nigerian dwarf goats and two sheep.

A Stress-Free Experience for All Ages

The all-levels yoga classes welcome beginners and experienced practitioners alike, with one key difference from typical studio sessions – furry companions who are eager to snuggle. Located at 1923 Shaw Road, Durham, NC, the classes take place outdoors under an event tent, providing plenty of shade during summer months.

Poses are optional, but smiling and relaxing are almost guaranteed. The experience is designed for ages 5 and up, emphasizing a calm, relaxing atmosphere where participants can connect with both their practice and the animals.

Specially Trained Animals Make the Difference

What sets Avery Family Farm apart is their commitment to animal training. All 23 Nigerian dwarf goats have been specifically trained to cuddle with humans, alongside two sheep who have spent their entire lives socializing with both the goats and people. This careful preparation ensures a safe, enjoyable experience for both animals and participants.

Safety and Comfort Guidelines

The farm has implemented COVID safety precautions and maintains limited class sizes to ensure quality experiences. Participants are advised to wear clothes and closed-toe shoes that can get dirty, bring a large towel or blanket, and avoid wearing earrings or necklaces that might catch the animals’ attention.

More Than Just Yoga

The farm experience extends beyond the yoga session. Participants can purchase farm-fresh products including duck eggs and goat milk soap, as well as crystals, t-shirts, tote bags, and farm stickers. The operation accepts various payment methods including cash, check, digital payments, and credit cards.

Growing Popularity Requires Early Registration

At $23 per participant, the classes have become so popular that early registration is essential. The farm recommends booking well in advance, though they offer a text service at 919-236-3244 for last-minute availability checks. Tickets can be purchased on the Eventbrite.com website.

Weather-Resistant Programming

The covered outdoor setup allows classes to continue even during light rain. Only severe weather conditions, extreme temperatures, or major storms result in rescheduling, with participants notified via text and email.

Flexible Cancellation Policy

Understanding that plans can change, the farm offers full refunds or rescheduling for cancellations made more than 48 hours in advance. Cancellations within 48 hours can be rescheduled, with emergency exceptions considered case-by-case.

The continued success of goat yoga at Avery Family Farm demonstrates the growing appeal of animal-assisted wellness activities, combining the mental health benefits of yoga with the therapeutic effects of animal interaction in a uniquely Durham setting.
