GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne County’s NC Cooperative Extension recently hosted its monthly “Tasty Friday at the Market” event, drawing community members together to celebrate local agriculture and healthy eating. The gathering featured a demonstration of fresh cucumber watermelon salad prepared by Michelle Estrada, the county’s Family & Consumer Science agent.
Local Farms Take Center Stage
The demonstration showcased produce from several local agricultural operations, including J and J Martins Farm Produce, Britts Farm, and Heritage Samples. These partnerships highlight the region’s commitment to supporting local farmers while providing fresh, quality ingredients to residents.
“Every month we promote local produce to educate the community,” said Estrada. “We have a newsletter that we send out every month to educate people about tips on cucumbers.”
Extension’s Broader Mission
The Tasty Friday event represents just one component of NC Cooperative Extension’s comprehensive approach to community education and support.
Health and Nutrition Programs
Extension’s health initiatives help residents make informed dietary choices, reduce chronic disease risk, and improve overall quality of life through evidence-based nutrition education, local food promotion, and food safety training.
4-H Youth Development
The organization’s 4-H programs serve hundreds of thousands of young people across North Carolina, addressing contemporary youth issues while developing future community leaders with stronger health awareness and civic engagement.
Agricultural Support
Extension plays a crucial role in maintaining North Carolina’s robust agricultural economy, valued at over $100 billion. The organization connects producers with research-based information and cutting-edge technology to ensure sustainable and profitable farming practices.
The monthly market events continue Extension’s tradition of bridging the gap between agricultural producers and consumers, fostering a stronger local food system that benefits both farmers and community health.
