Wall Behind the Plate: UMO’s Mike Kenney Earns ABCA All-Defensive Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 23) — University of Mount Olive standout and recent graduate Mike Kenney has been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NCAA Division II Southeast Region All-Defensive Team, capping off a stellar senior season behind the plate.

A native of Chandler, Arizona, Kenney earned the prestigious regional honor at catcher, recognizing his defensive excellence throughout the 2025 season. He started 39 of 51 games for the Trojans and posted a remarkable .996 fielding percentage, recording 242 putouts, 30 assists, and throwing out 16 would-be base stealers.

This marks the second all-defensive honor of the season for Kenney, who was also recognized by Conference Carolinas for his defensive contributions. His efforts were instrumental in solidifying Mount Olive’s defense and game management from behind the dish.

Kenney’s recognition continues a strong tradition for the Trojans, who have now placed a player on the ABCA All-Defensive Team for three consecutive years. Mount Olive was one of only two Conference Carolinas programs represented on this year’s regional list, underscoring the program’s consistent emphasis on defensive excellence.

The ABCA All-Defensive Teams are selected through a rigorous voting process by member coaches and overseen by the ABCA NCAA Division II All-America & Coach of the Year Committee.

Kenney’s honor not only reflects his individual talent and work ethic but also highlights the strength of Mount Olive’s baseball program and its ability to develop elite-level defensive players.
