Raleigh, N.C. — Governor Josh Stein has officially proclaimed June 1–7 as the North Carolina S.A.F.E. Week of Action, a statewide initiative aimed at raising awareness about the critical importance of safe firearm storage. Sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS), the Week of Action calls on communities, families, and organizations across the state to take meaningful steps in preventing gun-related tragedies.
“Safely storing firearms can be the difference between life and death,” said Governor Stein. “When people understand the risks, they are more likely to take action to protect themselves and their families. That’s what S.A.F.E. Week is all about – keeping people safe from gun violence.”
The effort comes amid growing concern over rising gun thefts and unsecured weapons. According to FBI data, gun thefts from vehicles are now occurring at three times the rate they were a decade ago, with 10 North Carolina cities ranking among the top 100 U.S. cities for reported vehicle gun thefts in 2022.
Recognizing this troubling trend, Governor Stein’s recent budget proposal includes over $2.2 million in funding for safe storage initiatives across the state. Research shows that securely storing firearms—especially away from children and those at risk of harm—significantly reduces the likelihood of unintentional shootings, suicides, and theft.
“Every conversation and every gun lock distributed brings us closer to a safer North Carolina,” said NCDPS Deputy Secretary William Lassiter. “Our collective efforts are reaching families across the state and making a real impact.”
Community Events Across the State
Throughout the week, local organizations, law enforcement agencies, and healthcare providers are hosting educational events focused on gun safety. Free gun locks will be distributed at many of these gatherings. Key events include:
- A press conference with the TSA at Charlotte Douglas International Airport
- A Community Day hosted by Atrium Brenner’s Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem
- A public safety event with the Asheville Police Department
- A multi-agency press event in Elizabeth City featuring state and local officials
“As healthcare providers and safety advocates, our priority is protecting the health and well-being of every child,” said Dr. Becca Palmer, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Wake Forest School of Medicine. “Safe firearm storage is a simple but powerful step we can all take to prevent tragedies and save lives.”
