A Sea of Flags and Silent Thanks: Mount Olive Honors Its Veterans

Mount Olive, N.C. — Over Memorial Day weekend, members of Mount Olive VFW Post 9959, along with local volunteers, carried out a solemn and respectful tradition to honor fallen military service members. Activities began early Saturday morning at Maplewood Cemetery, where the group gathered to place American flags on the graves of veterans in recognition of their service and sacrifice.

Volunteers moved methodically through the cemetery, placing flags at the resting places of men and women who served in all branches of the United States Armed Forces across multiple wars and conflicts. The effort covered a large portion of Maplewood Cemetery, which contains the graves of veterans dating back to the early 20th century. The initiative was not only a symbolic act of remembrance but also a reflection of the community’s deep respect for those who served.

While teams placed flags throughout the grounds, other members of the VFW were occupied with preparing the site for the upcoming Memorial Day service. This included setting up a large tent and arranging seating for the ceremony scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m., members of VFW Post 9959, local residents, and guests gathered under the tent for the official Memorial Day Service. The program followed a traditional structure designed to honor the memory of fallen service members and reflect on their contributions to the nation.

The service began with opening formalities, including a moment of invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, fostering a respectful and patriotic atmosphere. A musical selection performed during the ceremony offered an emotional tribute to those being remembered.

A significant part of the service was the keynote address delivered by Retired U.S. Army Colonel Kenneth Sullivan. His remarks focused on the historical importance of Memorial Day, the role of the military in safeguarding freedom, and the need for communities to continue remembering and honoring veterans.

A wreath-laying ceremony followed, with participation from Post 9959 leadership and members of the VFW Auxiliary. As the wreath was placed, the American flag was respectfully lowered to half-staff, and the ceremonial playing of “Taps” marked a poignant conclusion to the tribute.

The event concluded with a benediction, closing a weekend of remembrance that brought the Mount Olive community together in shared gratitude. Events like these, organized annually by the VFW, serve as a vital reminder of the enduring impact of military service and the collective responsibility to remember those who gave their lives in defense of the nation.
