Pueblo, Colo. — (May 22) — In a fitting finale to an exceptional collegiate career, Dominic Nutter, a graduate student at the University of Mount Olive (UMO), etched his name deeper into NCAA Division II track and field history by earning First-Team All-American honors for the fifth time. Nutter claimed seventh place in the men’s hammer throw at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, hosted at the Thunderbowl in Pueblo, Colorado.
With a best mark of 61.28 meters, recorded on his second attempt during Thursday afternoon’s competition, Nutter solidified his place among the nation’s elite throwers. His performance not only added to his personal accolades but also contributed two crucial points to Mount Olive’s team score, marking the seventh time in program history that the Trojans have registered points on the national stage.
A Storied Collegiate Journey
Nutter transferred to UMO for his final season of eligibility after a stellar career at Walsh University, where he earned four NCAA All-American honors — two in the hammer throw and two in the weight throw. His move to Mount Olive paid immediate dividends, as he quickly established himself as a dominant force in the southeast region.
During the 2024 outdoor season, Nutter captured the Conference Carolinas championship in the hammer throw and set a new conference record in the event. He was also recognized with USTFCCCA All-Region honors, underscoring his status as one of the most consistent and technically proficient throwers in the country.
“Dominic has been a tremendous asset to our program, both as an athlete and as a leader,” said UMO throws coach [Insert Coach Name if Known]. “His dedication, work ethic, and ability to perform under pressure have been nothing short of inspiring. This All-American honor is a reflection of all the effort he’s put in, not just this year, but throughout his entire college career.”
Rising to the Occasion on the National Stage
The men’s hammer throw final featured one of the most competitive fields in recent Division II memory, with all top eight finishers surpassing the 60-meter mark — a testament to the depth and quality of this year’s participants. Among them were two athletes who recorded personal bests during the competition, pushing the bar even higher.
Despite the pressure, Nutter remained composed, delivering his top throw of 61.28 meters early in the competition. His mark held up through the final rounds, earning him seventh place and First-Team All-American status — awarded to the top eight finishers in each event.
Leaving a Legacy
Nutter’s time at Mount Olive, though brief, will be remembered for its impact. His achievements this season elevated the Trojans’ national profile and added to the growing legacy of a program that continues to produce high-level talent in track and field.
As he wraps up his collegiate career, Nutter departs with a résumé that includes:
- Five NCAA All-American honors (3 Hammer, 2 Weight Throw)
- Multiple Conference Championships
- School and Conference Records
- Leadership on and off the field
