“Two Wheelers for Tommy” Rolls Into Its Fourth Year, Honoring a Beloved Community Member with Every Ride

Goldsboro, N.C. — On Sunday, in a small town with a big heart, an annual event has become much more than a community gathering — it has become a living legacy. Now in its fourth year, Two Wheelers for Tommy, hosted by local nonprofit Kriquette’s Kidz, once again brought together families, volunteers, and businesses to provide bikes for children in need — all in loving memory of a man whose impact is still felt deeply: Tommy King.

What started in 2022 as a way to process collective grief has grown into a vibrant celebration of generosity, resilience, and community. That year, friends and family were devastated by the sudden loss of Tommy, a lifelong resident known for his unwavering dedication to helping others. Whether he was volunteering his time, lending a hand, or simply encouraging someone with his signature phrase — “Let’s make it happen” — Tommy was the kind of person whose presence lifted everyone around him.

Rather than let his light fade, those who knew and loved him chose to channel their grief into action.

“We lost Tommy so suddenly, and it left a hole in our community,” said Kriquette Davis, founder of Kriquette’s Kidz. “But we knew the best way to honor him was to keep doing what he did best — give back.”

Turning Grief into Good

From that decision, Two Wheelers for Tommy was born — a grassroots effort to provide custom-fitted bicycles to children who might not otherwise have the chance to own one. With each bike given, the event offers not only the freedom and joy that comes with riding, but also a reminder of Tommy’s giving spirit.

Each year, the Kriquette’s Kidz team works tirelessly to raise funds, coordinate logistics, and gather referrals for families in need. Children are referred by a network of school systems, medical offices, churches, and nonprofit partners, ensuring that those who need a bike the most are reached. Every family submits a simple registration form with the child’s name, age, and size — a small detail that makes a big difference.

Davis explained. “Each bike is chosen to fit that specific child. It’s about catering to the children’s needs.”

The Wheels Keep Turning

Thanks to a longstanding partnership with Bicycle World, the referred bikes are ordered, assembled, and prepped in time for the big day. The shop not only ensures every bike is safely and professionally built but also donates time and expertise to support the cause.

This year’s event was no exception. Held on a warm spring day, the event site was buzzing with activity as dozens of families arrived to receive their bikes. Children’s eyes widened with excitement as they spotted the rows of shiny new bicycles, ready and waiting.

Volunteers were on hand for every step of the process — adjusting seat heights, helping families find the right fit, and even loading bikes into cars and trucks for those without enough room. For some children, it was the first bicycle they’d ever owned. For others, it was a replacement after tough times.

The event wasn’t just about the bikes. It was about togetherness. Local organizations, and individual volunteers came out in force, donating time, supplies, and funds. Laughter filled the air, children zipped around on test rides, and families posed for photos with their new wheels.

A Family’s Tribute

One of the most emotional moments of the day came from Tommy’s own daughters, who not only attended the event but raised $2,090 in his honor — a heartfelt donation that directly funded several bikes.

As part of the closing ceremony, the sisters released butterflies into the sky in memory of their father — a beautiful and symbolic tribute to a life that continues to inspire action.

A Community That Cares

The impact of Two Wheelers for Tommy continues to grow year after year, with each new event deepening the sense of community and purpose. For families who are struggling, the gift of a bike is more than a toy — it’s a symbol of support.

Looking Ahead

With four successful years behind them, the team at Kriquette’s Kidz has no plans of slowing down. The goal for next year? Even more bikes, more families, and more community partners.

In the end, Two Wheelers for Tommy is about much more than bicycles. It’s about love. It’s about legacy. It’s about the powerful ripple effect one person can have — even after they’re gone.

And as those bikes hit the pavement, weaving through neighborhoods and parks, Tommy’s spirit rides on, loud and proud.
