Goldsboro, N.C. — Herman Park transformed into a lively hub of activity on Saturday, May 17, as community members of all ages gathered for the annual Community Health and Wellness Fair. The event, aimed at promoting health awareness and providing access to vital resources, attracted a large turnout and featured a wide array of activities, services, and entertainment.
The fair offered a welcoming and inclusive environment, encouraging families to spend the day engaging in wellness-related experiences. Throughout the park, visitors enjoyed a festive atmosphere with upbeat music, family-friendly games, and a variety of food vendors offering nutritious snacks and refreshments. Children were treated to inflatable bounce houses and interactive play zones, while adults explored informational booths and received free health screenings.
One of the key participants was the Wayne County Health Department, which offered several of its community outreach services. Attendees had the opportunity to undergo basic health assessments including blood pressure readings, blood sugar checks, and measurements of height and weight. In addition to these screenings, the department provided information on its diabetes prevention and management programs, emphasizing the importance of regular health monitoring and early detection of chronic conditions. Representatives also shared details about their opioid prevention efforts, designed to educate the public about substance use risks and available support resources. Given the season’s increase in respiratory illnesses, the department distributed free N95 masks to attendees as part of a broader initiative to promote respiratory health.
Another major presence at the fair was the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures® mobile dental unit. For nearly 30 years, this program has traveled across the country providing dental education and preventive care to underserved communities. At the event, the mobile unit served as both an educational space and a registration site, where parents could sign their children up for future dental services. Staff members discussed the importance of early dental hygiene habits and explained how the program operates through seven regional teams in various states, with a focus on improving oral health among school-aged children.
Entertainment played a central role in creating an upbeat and energetic environment. The Funk Nation Drumline delivered a high-energy performance that drew crowds and added to the celebratory mood. Their performance was one of several that took place throughout the day, keeping guests engaged and energized.
Health and community organizations set up booths around the park, providing pamphlets, giveaways, and in-person consultations to educate residents about local services. Topics ranged from mental health and nutrition to physical fitness and housing assistance. Many organizations took the opportunity to speak directly with attendees, sharing their mission and highlighting how their programs support community well-being.
Overall, the Community Health and Wellness Fair proved to be more than just a gathering—it served as a critical platform for connecting residents with the health and support services they need. By combining fun, education, and practical assistance, the event succeeded in fostering a stronger, healthier, and more informed community.
