Is Your Child’s Car Seat Safe? 3 Out of 4 Aren’t—Wayne County Agency Offers Free Safety Checks This May

Goldsboro, N.C. — As families buckle up for summer travel, the Partnership for Children of Wayne County is issuing an urgent reminder during Child Passenger Safety Month: three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly, according to national safety statistics. In response, the organization is offering free, expert car seat safety checks throughout May to help protect the community’s youngest passengers.

Child Passenger Safety Month is a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the importance of correctly installing and using child safety seats. Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death for children, but properly used car seats can reduce the risk of injury or death by as much as 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

At the Partnership for Children of Wayne County, four certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) are on staff and ready to help parents and caregivers ensure their car seats are correctly installed and that children are using the appropriate seat for their size and age.

“Your child’s safety is non-negotiable,” the agency stated. “Even the most well-meaning caregivers can make mistakes when it comes to car seat installation. That’s why we provide this free, hands-on service—to empower families and prevent tragedies before they happen.”

🔧 What Happens During a Car Seat Safety Check:

  • Hands-on help installing or adjusting your car seat to manufacturer and safety guidelines
  • Personalized instruction on correct harnessing and child positioning
  • Education on North Carolina’s car seat laws, expiration dates, recalls, and proper transitions between rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster seats
  • Peace of mind that your child is riding safely every time you hit the road

🛑 Common Issues Found During Safety Checks:

  • Loose installation or improper use of seat belts or latch systems
  • Harness straps too loose or incorrectly positioned
  • Children riding in seats that are inappropriate for their weight or height
