Goldsboro, N.C. — The Goldsboro Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office are issuing a strong reminder to residents: Lock your car doors.
This message comes in response to a recent spike in vehicle break-ins reported over the last two weeks. According to authorities, at least 95% of these incidents involved vehicles that were left unlocked — making them easy targets for thieves.
“In many cases, there’s no forced entry,” a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office said. “People are simply leaving their vehicles unlocked with valuables clearly visible on the seats. It only takes seconds for someone to open a door and take what’s inside.”
Items such as wallets, purses, electronics, and other valuables are often left in plain sight, making unattended and unlocked vehicles an easy opportunity for crime.
Local law enforcement is encouraging all residents to take these simple but effective steps to protect their property:
- Always lock your car doors, even if you’re parking at home.
- Do not leave valuables in your vehicle, especially in plain view.
- Park in well-lit areas when possible.
- Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement immediately.
As the summer months approach—when these types of crimes tend to increase—both departments stress the importance of community awareness and proactive prevention.
