Operations Unite Goldsboro — Discussing Youth Programs, Career Paths, and Mental Health Advocacy

Goldsboro Police Strengthens Community Ties Through Youth Outreach, Mental Health Advocacy, and Career Pathways

Goldsboro, N.C. — The Goldsboro Police Department is taking a proactive approach to community engagement and youth development through a series of collaborative programs, outreach initiatives, and workforce development strategies discussed in a recent roundtable meeting of Operation Unit Goldsboro.

From youth violence prevention to law enforcement career development and mental health advocacy, the department is positioning itself not just as a law enforcement agency, but as a partner in building a stronger, safer, and more unified community.

Investing in the Future of Law Enforcement

One major highlight is the department’s enhanced police officer training program, which now includes outreach to local high school seniors with an interest in law enforcement careers. Recognizing the gap between graduation and eligibility for Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), the department is offering administrative employment at the police station for 18-year-olds. This gives students hands-on exposure to police operations and bridges the two-year gap needed before entering BLET.

The department also participated in the Wayne County Public Schools Career Fair/Job Fest at Spring Creek High School, further promoting pathways into law enforcement. Additionally, the Law Enforcement Fellows Program offers tuition coverage for students pursuing two-year degrees in criminal justice, creating a financially viable path for future officers.

Combating Youth Violence Through Engagement

With youth violence an ongoing concern—particularly during the summer months when schools are out—the Goldsboro Police Department has stepped up efforts to engage local teens. Officers are building connections through sports programs, offering constructive activities to keep youth active, off the streets, and out of trouble.

“When students have too much idle time, we tend to see a rise in Part 1 crimes,” a department representative noted. “Engaging youth early through education, sports, and career development helps redirect that energy toward something positive.”

A Call for Mental Health in Schools

The department also issued a strong call to action for expanded mental health programs in Wayne County Public Schools. Emphasizing the link between mental wellness and public safety, officials stressed the importance of educating students about mental health and equipping schools with the proper resources.

“Mental health matters,” the department emphasized. “When students are supported emotionally, they are more likely to thrive academically and socially. We urge local leaders to prioritize this.”

Promoting STEM and Nonprofit Collaboration

In addition to sports and the arts, the department is advocating for renewed investment in STEM education for youth. Local nonprofit Kinetic Minds has taken the lead, offering after-school STEM programming aimed at sparking curiosity and preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

However, officials noted a critical gap in coordination among community organizations. While Wayne County has numerous resources and support programs, the message from the roundtable was clear: unity and communication are essential.

“Too many groups are doing great work in silos,” one participant noted. “We need to come together more intentionally and ensure our residents know what’s available to them.”

Legislative Efforts to Support Families

House Bill 389, currently in development, was also discussed. This legislation aims to increase the availability of childcare workers, addressing a growing need in Wayne County and throughout the state. Access to affordable, quality childcare is seen as a foundational element for economic mobility and family stability.

A Vision for a Stronger Goldsboro

From enhancing police-community relations to advocating for youth empowerment and mental health awareness, the Goldsboro Police Department’s multi-pronged strategy underscores a vision for a more connected, resilient community.

Residents and organizations are encouraged to get involved and support these efforts. For more information on programs and partnership opportunities, contact the Goldsboro Police Department or the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.
