May 11, 2025, 87, Goldsboro —
James Jordan Godwin, 87, peacefully slipped into eternity at his home on Sunday, May 11, 2025 surrounded by his family. Born in Johnston County on April 16, 1938, he was the son of the late Paul Godwin and Blanche Gardner Godwin.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his 1st wife of 54 years, Jo Godwin.
James is survived by his wife of 10 years, Gerri Godwin; daughter, Donna Jo Godwin Price (Billy); granddaughter, Kelly Jo Jones (Rodney); great-grandchildren, Olivia Jo Hinnant and Jaxon Jones; bonus children, Tonia Boyette (Mark), Michael Pearce, and Joe Pearce; bonus grandchildren, Timothy Boyette, Landen Boyette, and Lisa Mull (Rich); bonus great-grandson, Alan-Michael Hales; and sister, Paulette Godwin Hardie (Bob).
James spent much of his career as an engineer at Westinghouse, where he was respected for his dedication and work ethic. Beyond his professional achievements, James was a man of deep character—always ready to lend a hand.
A true family man, James cherished time with his loved ones above all else. He and his beloved wife, Gerri, shared a bond built on adventure and joy. In their early years of marriage, without fail, the two could be found riding their motorcycle together, making memories on the open road. James made two trips to Sturgis, South Dakota, one with his buddies and one with Gerri and another couple.
James had a lifelong love of go-karts and racing, passions that spoke to his adventurous spirit and hands-on nature. He found peace and purpose in working outdoors—especially with his backhoe and on the lawn mower. Even as his health declined, James’s determination never wavered; he continued to get on the backhoe, doing what he loved and staying connected to the land and work that grounded him.
James’s legacy is one of hard work, deep love, and an unshakable enthusiasm for life. He will be remembered for his laughter, his loyalty, and his unwavering commitment to the people and things he loved.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Kenly Funeral Service. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Kenly Funeral Service. James will be laid to rest at the Godwin Cemetery.
