Carl F. Mumford, 90, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Wilson County on September 23, 1934, to the late George Carl and Ida Poythress Mumford.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his brother, James Durand Mumford.

Carl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myrtle Batten Mumford; his sons, Michael Mumford and Mark Mumford (Jennifer); and his grandson, Adam Mumford.

Carl loved to watch a good race. He spent many hours tinkering with his old tractors and muscle car. He also loved spending time on the water, especially boating at White Lake.

Carl attended Kenly School, then went on to Oak Ridge Military Institute, where he graduated in 1952. That same year, he joined the United States Air Force and trained to be a paratrooper in the 3rd Aerial Port Squadron. By 1956, he had earned a Master Parachutist Badge for completing 65 jumps. In 1957, he joined the 48th Air Rescue Squadron. From 1958 to 1959, Carl was stationed on the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. Before leaving the Air Force in 1961, he had completed 85 jumps.

From 1961 to 1969, Carl worked with the NC Prison Department. The remainder of his working career was spent in heavy construction as a motor grader operator.

In 2024, Carl received Christ as his personal Savior.

A time of visitation and remembrance will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Kenly Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. A service to celebrate Carl’s life will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Kenly Funeral Service. A private interment will be held at the Tom Barnes Family Cemetery.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Wilson 3HC for the exceptional care provided to Carl in his final days.
