Goldsboro, N.C. – On May 12, 2025 Wayne STEM Academy has been honored with the Purple Star Award by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, a distinguished recognition celebrating the school’s strong and ongoing commitment to supporting students from military families.
Located in Goldsboro and serving communities across Wayne County, Wayne STEM Academy was established with a unique mission: to provide an innovative, student-centered education while meeting the distinct needs of children from military households, particularly those affiliated with Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
“This recognition deeply resonates with our commitment to serving our remarkable military-connected students and families,” said Dr. Todd Forgette, Executive Director of Wayne STEM Academy. “It underscores our dedication to ensuring a supportive and understanding environment for these brave young individuals. Special credit goes to our Director of Operations, Josh Preskitt, whose tireless efforts and unwavering advocacy made this possible.”
Built with Military Families in Mind
Wayne STEM Academy’s academic model is designed not only to foster critical thinking and collaboration through a STEM-focused curriculum, but also to address the unique social and emotional needs of students who may experience frequent relocations, parental deployments, and other military-related challenges.
The school employs dedicated military liaison staff and actively partners with military and community organizations to create a smooth and supportive transition for incoming students. These efforts have helped the school build a reputation for excellence in serving both academic and personal development needs of military-connected children.
“Receiving the Purple Star Award is extremely significant for our school,” said Josh Preskitt, Director of Operations. “We aim to meet individuals where they are and partner with them to see them excel. This award reflects that mission and our community’s shared commitment to service.”
About the Purple Star Award
The Purple Star Award is given annually to North Carolina schools that demonstrate exemplary support for military families. To earn the designation, schools must meet rigorous criteria including appointing a military liaison, maintaining a dedicated webpage with resources for military families, and conducting staff training on the needs of military-connected students.
Wayne STEM Academy’s designation highlights its leadership in creating a nurturing academic environment where all students — regardless of background or mobility — can thrive.
