Charles Franklin Lewis, age 85, passed away Sunday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC. Born in Kinston, NC, he was the son of the late Oscar Green and Lossie Mae Davis Lewis. He was the husband of the late Alice Kay Hood Lewis. Charles was a graduate of Grainger High School and was a proud member of the Kinston Sports Hall of Fame. He earned his Bachelors & Masters Degree from East Carolina University where he was on the basketball team. He went on to coach and teach English at Rockingham High School and Charles B. Aycock High. Charles had 30 years of service as an educator, retiring from the Clinton City School System. After Charles and Kay retired to Beaufort, they continued to teach as instructors with Carolina Ocean Studies. He attended The Vine Fellowship Church and loved boating & fishing in Beaufort.
A service to celebrate Charles and his wife, Kay, will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at The Vine Fellowship Church with Pastor Matthew Barefoot officiating. There will be a time of visitation for family and friends at 2:00 pm at the church.
Charles is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Eric & Bettie Blue Lewis, Scott & April Lewis and Chad & Lisa Lewis; grandchildren, Sawyer (Caitlyn), Carly (Travis), Ethan (Kirsten), Connor, Cullen and Harrison; great grandchildren, Logan, Scarlett and Brandon.
Along with his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by his son, Jeffress Kyle Lewis; his great grandson, Spencer Federer; and sisters, Melba, Shirley and Hazel.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask for memorial contributions be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in loving memory of their son, Jeffress Kyle Lewis.
