Jo Carraway Gurley, age 76, of Goldsboro, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, April 4, 2025, at Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro. Born on June 23, 1948, in Wayne County, Jo was the daughter of the late Ralph S. and Dorothy Sutton Carraway. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Greg Gurley, on March 10, 2025.
Jo lived a life of grace and devotion. A dedicated employee of Goldtex, Inc., Jo retired after 26 years of faithful service, where she was known for her diligence and work ethic. Beyond her career, Jo’s heart belonged to the Lord. She faithfully served her church community and was a cherished member of the choir, lending her beautiful voice to worship. Music was an integral part of her life, and Jo was a proud member of the East Coast Gospel Music Association.
Jo’s spiritual journey began at Pineview Baptist Church and continued at Rosewood First Baptist Church, where she found strength and solace. Her unwavering faith was reflected in every aspect of her life, from her devotion to her family to her service in the church and community. She especially loved all the time spent with her sister. From a very early age they created memories, mischief and a love for family that continued until the very end.
Jo shared a special and enduring bond with her husband Greg, and together they enjoyed traveling, creating memories and experiencing life side by side. Their love for one another was an example of true devotion, one that will live on in the hearts of all who knew them.
A loving mother to her children, Jo was the cornerstone of her family. She ensured they were always supported, loved, and encouraged. One of her greatest joys was being a proud Nana to her two grandchildren, and she never hesitated to share stories of their accomplishments and bright futures.
Jo is survived by her children, Shannon Gurley Walker and husband, Craig of Winterville, and Scott Gurley and wife, Stephanie of Pikeville; her grandchildren, Hayleigh and Joshua Walker; her sister, Betty Carraway Wells; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family whom she loved deeply.
A service to celebrate Jo’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 1:00 PM in the sanctuary of Rosewood First Baptist Church with Rev. Vernon Braswell, Rev. Ron Hawley, and Rev. Tim Lipp officiating. The family will greet friends from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Jo’s memory to Cures for the Colors, SMOC, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, NC 27534 or to the East Coast Gospel Music Association,c/o ECGMA at 2065 Woodard Road, Princeton, NC 27569.
