A. N. Martin III

A. N. Martin III, Mount Olive resident, at the age of 88, passed away early Sunday morning, February 5, 2023.

Funeral services will be held by the graveside in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 8, and will include military honors as well as masonic burial rites. A time of visitation will follow the service at the cemetery, and at other times, friends may call at the Steve Martin residence. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to the Michael L. Martin Scholarship, University of Mount Olive, PO Box 90, Mount Olive, NC 28365.

Having been raised in the town of Mount Olive, A.N. was the son of the late Ammie N. Martin, Jr. and Jessie Britt Martin. He proudly served in the United States Army with service in Korea. A. N. completed college, obtaining a bachelor’s degree, and embarked on a fulfilling career with the Internal Revenue Service as a federal agent, from which he retired. A. N. served as the business manager for Ann’s Flower Shoppe, a florist operated by his late wife, Ann.

A. N. was a long-time member of the Mount Olive Lion’s Club and a member of the Mount Olive Masonic Lodge 208 A.F. & A.M.  He was an avid sports enthusiast, especially of baseball. He and his wife also enjoyed horse racing and made several trips to watch the Florida Derbies.

A. N. and his late wife were honored to have been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at the University of Mount Olive, acknowledging their untiring efforts in support of the Michael L. Martin Memorial Golf Tournament Scholarship, underwritten by Friendly Marts, Inc. and sponsored by area businesses and individuals.

Mr. Martin is survived by his son, Steve Martin with Kelly Herring and their daughter, Little Miss Anna Kate Martin, all of Mount Olive; a daughter-in-law, LaDonna Smith Martin, widow of Trooper Michael L. Martin, of Greensboro; and several nieces and a nephew and their families. A. N. also leaves behind his pet and daily companion, Scooter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Wilson Martin; son, N.C. Highway Trooper Michael Louis Martin; and brother, George Britt Martin.
