Hilda Liles Strider, age 97 passed away peacefully on January 2, 2023, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C. Hilda was born in Goldsboro to Orion Clinton Liles and Hortense Foushee Liles on November 23, 1925. She was the 10th of 11 children. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband Pierce Winborn Strider and all of her siblings-David Lee Liles, Henry Clinton Liles, Dorothy Liles Radford, Katherine Liles Warren, Roy Milton Liles, Ada Gray Liles, Gladys Liles Stephens, Charles Vander Liles, Hortense Liles Rouse, and Martha Meredith Liles. She is survived by 23 nieces and nephews spread out all over the United States
After the death of her husband, Hilda and her younger sister Meredith began to live together in 1962 and since that time became virtually inseparable. They both always introduced each other as “my sister and best friend”. The family has long thought that when either of them died the other would not be far behind. Meredith passed away last month. Because Hilda and Meredith had been so close for so long the family made the decision to wait and to have one joint funeral service to celebrate them both together. Services will be on Friday, January 13, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro with I. K. Williamson officiating. Visitation with the family will precede the service from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. Hilda’s interment will take place at Wayne Memorial Park immediately following the service. Meredith’s interment service was held in December.
Hilda was a graduate of Goldsboro High School and Meredith College. Upon returning to Goldsboro after college she began working for the Wayne County Department of Social Services where she worked for four decades. She was truly revered by all of her coworkers and had a long-lasting impact on the lives of many citizens in Wayne County.
Hilda was a charter member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. While in good health, she and Meredith rarely missed a Sunday service and were active in all facets of the church. The Special Blessings Class that she taught for many years was near and dear to her heart. Other than the family, nothing was more important to Hilda than her church and its congregation. She continued her support of Madison Avenue until the day of her death.
In her later years, as her health began to decline, it became necessary to hire someone to provide help for both her and Meredith. The person hired was Joan Daly. Little did the family know at the time just how important and special that decision would become. It cannot be overstated to say how much Joan has done to provide a high quality of life for both Hilda and Meredith. Almost from the beginning, they thought of Joan as a newly found younger sister, thank you, Joan. The love, help, and kindness you always showed them are immeasurable.
In addition to Joan, Hilda and Meredith were well cared for and loved by Julia Russell, as well as the staff at Brookdale Country Day Rd. and Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Thank you all.
