Shelton Eugene Smith

Shelton Eugene Smith

November 20, 2022, 92, Goldsboro –

Having lived a long and fruitful life, Shelton Eugene Smith passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at the age of 92. Shelton was born in Wayne County to the late Mark J. and Vicy Smith on November 25, 1929. No doubt the receiving line in heaven was lengthy, led first by his Savior and followed immediately by his wife and soulmate of 50 years, Peggy Crawford Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Shelton Eugene Smith, Jr. and Rita J. Smith; sisters, Madeline Gurganus, Markie Tomlinson and Jewel Jackson; and brothers, Frank Smith, Milton “Buck” Smith, Marcellus “Sill” Smith and William G. “Billy” Smith.

Dedicated to the success of the county in which he lived, Shelton retired from the County of Wayne where he served for over 30 years as the Superintendent of the Buildings and Grounds. In his time off from work, he enjoyed piddling and had the innate ability to make something out of nothing. He utilized his skills to start Smith’s Crafts, a business in which he enjoyed restoring the old and bringing life back to the smallest treasures.

A faithful member of Woods Grove P.F.W.B. Church, Shelton worshiped his Lord and contributed to the ministries of the church through various roles. Always willing to lend a helping hand, he recognized the strengths God had given him and used them to further His kingdom.

Shelton also maintained membership in the Order of the Odd Fellows and was involved in the work of the Waynesborough Historical Village and the Downtown Lions Club.

With a deep love for his family, Shelton relished every opportunity to gather with his clan. Any occasion was special enough for a gathering, but the cousin reunion was always a highlight. His role as husband, daddy, and papa were paramount in his life, as he considered his family one of his greatest joys. Always ready to share a word, he was a natural storyteller and great at telling jokes. He loved to laugh and equally loved watching others laugh.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 25, 2022, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Shelton’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Barry Teague officiating. The interment will be on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Shelton is survived by his children, Katherine S. Grant and husband, Tim, Carolyn S. Wegman and husband, Mike, and Jon Smith and wife, Jennifer; grandchildren, Cary Ann Kornegay and husband, Kevin, Ryan Smith and wife, Jennifer, Courtney Gorman and husband, Michael, Katie Jiros and husband, Marc, Christopher Smith and wife, Heather, Caleb Grant and wife, Kristy, David Smith, Rachel Tutterow and husband, Ben, Chris Mercer and wife, Beka, and Ryan Mercer; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Jean St. Clair; and several nieces and nephews he loved very much.
