GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Wayne County Public Schools has received $200,000 in state funding for upgrades to the Patrick M. Best Athletic Field at Dillard Middle School.
Rep. John Bell joined City of Goldsboro, Wayne County and Wayne County Public Schools leaders, along with community members, at the field for a ceremonial check presentation celebrating the investment.
The funding, provided through the North Carolina General Assembly, will support improvements to the athletic field, which has a long history of serving students and the surrounding Goldsboro community.
Goldsboro City Councilmember Brandi Matthews said securing the funding was a collaborative effort involving numerous people and organizations working toward a shared goal.
“This project is a beautiful example of what can happen when community and partnership paired with shared vision come together,” Matthews said. “No one person makes something like this happen. It takes people willing to work together and who believe that our children, our families and our neighborhoods deserve spaces we can be proud of.”
Matthews said the investment also provides an opportunity to preserve the history associated with the Patrick M. Best Athletic Field while preparing the facility to serve future generations.
“There is so much history at the Patrick M. Best Athletic Field, and this $200,000 investment allows us to honor what has been while creating something meaningful for what comes next,” Matthews said. “I’m excited about what this can become for our entire community, and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who helped move this vision forward.”
Officials thanked Bell, members of the General Assembly and the local leaders and community members who worked to secure the funding.
Specific details about the planned upgrades and a timeline for the improvements were not immediately announced.
