SHP: Brother Fled Scene Following Fatal Crash

Questions hang over a fatal Wayne County car crash.  Authorities were alerted to an overturned vehicle in a wooded area off Slick Rock Road Thursday, June 11th.  The crash is believed to have occurred late Wednesday, June 10th.  The vehicle apparently struck a mailbox as it left the road and overturned in the wooded area.  49-year-old Daniel K. Newcomb of Goldsboro was ejected in the crash and perished.  The State Highway Patrol says the decedent’s brother, Matthew H. Newcomb, fled the vehicle after the accident but was later found by authorities.  According to the Highway Patrol, both men had been involved in a domestic situation at a home on Slick Rock Road that was handled by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office earlier in the evening before the crash.  It’s not yet clear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.  Factors in the fatal accident include speed, alcohol, and lack of seatbelt use.  The State Highway Patrol says the ongoing investigation could lead to charges.
