June 26, 2026, 88, Goldsboro – Edna Ann Wood Smith, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Eagle’s Pointe in Goldsboro.
Born in Duplin County on December 21, 1937, Edna was the daughter of the late Harvey Lawrence Wood and Pauline Dail Wood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James “Jimmy” Jefferson Smith; her sisters, Lena Deans and Patsy Page; and her sister-in-law, Margie Smith Jackson.
Edna retired from Howell’s Child Care, where she spent many years caring for and nurturing children with the same kindness and patience that she shared with everyone she met. She found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially tending to her beautiful yard. Whether planting flowers, pulling weeds, or happily mowing the grass, Edna took pride in making her home as welcoming and beautiful as she was. She treasured time spent with her family and created lasting memories through her quiet acts of love and devotion.
A private family service will be held at Wayne Memorial Park.
Edna leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Pam Smith Gatlin and husband, Gary; her grandson, Tyler Gatlin and wife, Alyssa; her great-grandson, Elliot Gatlin; her brothers, David E. Wood and Charles E. Wood; her sister, Sara Strickland; and her special nieces, Patricia Watkins and Lynn Strube.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Literacy Connections in Goldsboro. The family also invites you to honor Edna’s memory by taking someone you love out for ice cream and a Diet Coke—a simple gesture that would have brought a smile to her face.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers of Gentiva Hospice for the love and comfort they provided during Edna’s final days. They also sincerely thank the staff of Eagle’s Pointe for their dedicated care, kindness, and friendship throughout her time there.
Though Edna lived a quiet life, she left a lasting impression on those who knew her through her gentle spirit, strong work ethic, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
