June 11, 2026, 78, Goldsboro – With grateful hearts for a life well lived, we celebrate the life and legacy of Mr. Joe Nathan Spruill, who departed this earthly life on June 11, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born on November 11, 1947, in Wayne County, North Carolina, Joe was the son of the late Leonard Spruill and Martha A. Cox Spruill. A lifelong resident of Goldsboro, he was educated in the Wayne County Public School System and attended Green Central High School.
Joe was a hardworking man who believed in providing for his family through honest labor. Throughout his career, he was employed with Pate & Dawson Motors, Frema Motors, and Mayflower Moving Company, where he earned the respect of coworkers and friends through his dedication and strong work ethic.
Known affectionately by many as “Papa Joe,” he possessed a personality that could brighten any room. Joe never met a stranger and was known throughout the community for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and ability to make others smile. Whether sharing stories, cracking jokes, or enjoying fellowship with family and friends, he had a special way of making people feel welcomed and valued.
Joe found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved detailing cars, taking pride in a well-kept vehicle, and spending time outdoors doing yard work. He enjoyed playing cards, shooting pool, tossing horseshoes, and participating in countless other hobbies that kept him active and connected with those around him. More than anything, he cherished the time spent with his family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his beloved sons, Joe Nathan Spruill, Jr. and Ronta M. Spruill; his wife, Rose Mary Worrells Spruill; sister, Myrtle S. Spruill; and his brother, Diamond L. Spruill, all of Goldsboro.
He leaves to cherish his memory three loving sons: Joseph I. Spruill of Goldsboro, Antonio M. Spruill (Zahara) of Goldsboro, and Matthew J. Spruill of Goldsboro; several grandchildren; brothers, Pastor L. D. Spruill (1st Lady Imogene) of Selma and James M. Spruill of Goldsboro; sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Spruill and a host of, nieces, nephews, other extended family members, dear friends, and countless individuals whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, and friendship.
Though his earthly journey has ended, the memories of Joe’s laughter, his loving spirit, and the joy he brought to others will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His legacy serves as a reminder to cherish family, value friendship, and find happiness in the everyday moments of life.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Atkinson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Interment will follow at Hooks Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Pikeville, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Home in Goldsboro.
“Papa Joe” will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
