Spetember 10,2026, 63, Goldsboro – Susan Denise Butler, 63, passed away at O’Berry Center in Goldsboro on Thursday, September 10, 2026. Born on February 7, 1963, she was the daughter of Virginia Faircloth Jewell and the late Lonnie Howard Butler.
In addition to her father, Denise was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Evangeline Meekins; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Buler.
Denise is survived by her mother, Virginia Jewell; brother, Lonnie Allen Butler; half-brother, Philip Butler; nephews, Brian Butler and Julius Lee Butler; great-nephew, Bradley Butler; and great-great-nephew, Asher Butler.
Denise was a beautiful soul whose life was a testament to the simple and powerful ways love can be shared. Though she faced lifelong challenges and was limited in many ways, Denise possessed a remarkable ability to bring joy to those around her. Her life was not measured by what she could or could not do, but by the love she gave so freely and the happiness she brought to others.
For many years, Denise called the O’Berry Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina, home. There, she became a familiar and cherished presence to those who cared for her and knew her. She found happiness in the things she loved most—listening to music, looking through magazines, receiving warm hugs, and, most of all, loving on the people around her. Denise had a special way of making a connection with others, often without needing words. A smile, a hug, or a gentle expression of affection spoke volumes about the love in her heart.
Denise will forever be remembered for her beautiful smile. It was a smile that came freely and often, brightening the days of those fortunate enough to know her. Her smile reflected the sweetness of her spirit and served as a reminder that some of life’s greatest blessings can be found in the simplest moments.
Although Denise’s life was touched by limitations, her capacity to love knew no limits. She gave affection freely, welcomed hugs warmly, and brought a sense of happiness wherever she went. Those who knew Denise will carry precious memories of her gentle spirit, her love of music and magazines, and, above all, that unforgettable smile.
Denise’s life reminds us that a meaningful life is not defined by accomplishments, but by the love we leave behind. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of kindness, affection, and joy, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and caring for her.
A private graveside service to celebrate Denise’s life will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Laurinburg, NC on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in memory of Denise.
