September 13, 41, Goldsboro- Russell Thomas Smith, 41, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2026 at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Born in Wayne County on November 1, 1984, he was son to Daniel Myers, III and Marilyn Smith.
Russell cherished the time he spent with his family and friends, who were truly the most important part of his life. He was a man who was always on the go, embracing life with an adventurous spirit and a genuine zest for living. Known for his kind and generous heart, Russell would do anything he could to help someone in need and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. His compassion, loyalty, and willingness to be there for others touched the lives of many.
Russell also had a deep love for his motorcycle and the freedom of the open road. Riding gave him a sense of adventure and allowed him to enjoy the beauty and freedom that came with each journey. Whether spending time with those he loved or traveling down an open road, Russell found joy in the simple moments and in making memories with the people around him. He will be remembered for his big heart, adventurous spirit, and the lasting impression he made on all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Russell is survived by his wife, Sara Dant Smith; his step-children, Leah and Steven Witmer; his sister, Heather Gross; his half-brother, Jackson Myers; his step-brother, Daniel Keeler; his step-sister, Hannah Keeler; his step-father’s, John Gross and Brian Keeler; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.
Russell was preceded in death by his grandmother, Wilma J. Smith.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church. A memorial service to honor Russell’s life will be held in the sactuary at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave Fishman officiating.
