RALEIGH, N.C. — With Labor Day celebrations approaching, law enforcement agencies and traffic safety officials across North Carolina are reminding motorists to make responsible choices and plan for a safe ride home.
The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program joined officials in Fayetteville to announce the launch of the annual Labor Day Booze It & Lose It campaign, a statewide effort aimed at keeping impaired drivers off North Carolina roads.
The enforcement initiative runs from Aug. 31 through Sept. 13 and will include increased law enforcement efforts and public awareness activities across the state. The campaign coincides with one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Officials say driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs continues to play a significant role in deadly crashes.
In 2025, 1,528 people were killed in crashes on North Carolina roadways, including 378 people who died in alcohol-related crashes. State officials say the goal of the Labor Day campaign is to prevent impaired driving and make sure motorists and passengers reach their destinations safely.
“We are urging everyone to plan ahead and choose a sober ride home from any celebration involving alcohol or other impairing substances,” NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell said. “Our partners in law enforcement will be out in force to keep roads safe and stop those who put others at risk. Safety remains our number one priority.”
Drivers who plan to drink are encouraged to arrange transportation before heading out. Options include choosing a designated sober driver, using a rideshare service or taxi, taking public transportation, or staying overnight with a friend or family member.
The Governor’s Highway Safety Program is also reminding motorists to buckle up, obey posted speed limits and never get behind the wheel while impaired.
The Labor Day Booze It & Lose It campaign begins Monday, Aug. 31, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 13.
