GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Two students connected to the Housing Authority of the City of Goldsboro have been awarded scholarships to help further their education as part of a scholarship program recognizing students from housing authority communities across the Carolinas.
Taneisha Ranae Johnson and Charlie Thomas were each selected to receive a $1,500 Eastern Carolina Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (ECAHRO) Anthony Goodson Jr. Scholarship.
Johnson is attending Winston-Salem State University, while Thomas is attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
The local students were recognized along with scholarship recipients from across North Carolina and South Carolina during the President’s Banquet at the 2026 Carolinas Council of Housing Redevelopment & Codes Officials Annual Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Anthony Goodson Jr. Scholarship supports residents of publicly assisted housing as they continue their education at accredited colleges, universities, technical schools and other institutions of higher education.
A third $1,500 Anthony Goodson Jr. Scholarship was presented to Jha’Aydah Davis Hicks of the Kinston Housing Authority, who is attending Morgan State University in Baltimore.
Overall, scholarship programs associated with the conference presented 18 awards totaling $20,000 to 17 students from housing authority communities across the Carolinas.
“Scholarships are one of the most meaningful ways our housing organizations can invest in the next generation,” CCHRCO President Veronica Revels said. “Our work extends beyond providing affordable housing. It is also about creating pathways to opportunity, encouraging educational achievement, and helping young people see what is possible for their futures. We are incredibly proud of each of these students.”
The awards were supported through scholarship programs from the Southeastern Regional Council of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, the CCHRCO/Triangle Community Foundation Endowment Fund, the NCHADA Memorial Mark Arrowood Scholarship and ECAHRO.
CCHRCO also recognized the housing authority executive directors, commissioners, staff members, families, mentors and community partners who have supported the students throughout their educational journeys.
“These scholarships represent much more than financial assistance,” Revels said. “They represent an investment in potential and a commitment to ensuring that the families we serve have opportunities to grow, achieve, and thrive. When we invest in education, we invest in stronger families and stronger communities.”
For Goldsboro, the awards represent a combined $3,000 investment in the educational futures of Johnson and Thomas as they continue their studies at two North Carolina universities.
