GOLDSBORO, NC – Natural Gas crews continue repairs following a gas leak near the intersection of George and Elm streets.
As of the latest update Wednesday afternoon, officials said the affected intersections and roadways are expected to remain closed until at least sunrise Thursday morning while crews work to fully repair the damaged lines.
Current closures include:
- George Street at Hemlock Street
- George Street at Pine Street
- Elm Street at James Street
- Elm Street just west of George Street
Earlier Wednesday, George Street was closed at Pine and Wayne streets, while Elm Street was blocked east of Dillard Charter Academy due to the gas leak at George and Elm streets.
Officials are asking motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes until repairs are completed and the roads can safely reopen.
Drivers are also being warned not to drive through or around barricades, fire trucks, police vehicles or other emergency equipment in an attempt to reach their destinations.
Officials said ignoring the closures could put first responders at risk and create additional hazards around the active gas leak and repair area.
Motorists should continue to expect delays and avoid the affected area through Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
