August 13, 2026,89, –Howard Glenn Brock, 89, passed peacefully in his sleep Thursday August 13, 2026, at Helping Hands Assisted Living Facility. A faithful servant of the Lord, we are comforted in knowing he is at peace with his Lord and Savior. He was born in Sampson County on April 9, 1937, to the late Albert & Mittie Brock.
Always a natural caregiver, Glenn took care of his mother, until her passing, after his father passed many years ago. Known as Papa or Papa Glenn to all the children and grandchildren, in his younger years he could be found traveling in the Winnebago with Irene and the grandkids to places like Maggie Valley or Disney World or somewhere else in the mountains. They were also known to take in a wrestling match or two in Raleigh watching Rick Flair and other big names of the times. After the move to Mt Olive, he could be found tinkering on something in one of his many sheds or taking a walk around the neighborhood or down the path. In his later years you could find him watching his favorite show, Walker Texas Ranger. He also loved a good cheeseburger, and would never turn one down with mustard, chili and onions followed by a milkshake to wash it down. Glenn also served in the Navy from 1956-1960 and he retired from Wooten Oil Company in the late 1990’s.
A service to celebrate Glenn’s life will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 10:00 am at the Chapel in the Wayne Memorial Park Mausoleum.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years Irene Burroughs Brock, his brothers Albert Jr, Willie Noy, Edward Ray and sisters Carolyn Rose and Faye Darden, his children Danny Carter and wife Kim, Dean Carter, and Beverly Garris and his grandchildren Tabatha Carter, Gary Dean Carter, Dana Carter, and Shane Carter.
Although he was never blessed with biological children of his own, he loved the ones he was graced with by his late wife Irene. Through the grace of God, they decided in 1987 to begin the journey of being foster parents. What a journey it was too! During their time in that program they took in and took care of over 140 children who needed them.
He leaves behind a loving family:
Sister: Joyce Gray of Georgia; Son-in-Law: Edsel Garris of Goldsboro; Daughter: Michelle Johnson of Pikeville; Grandchildren: Eugene Garris (Melanie), Genean Carter Spivey, Chris Garris (Brittany), Missy Carter, & Michael Sigmon (Bristina) all of Goldsboro; 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; Nephews: Joe & Chuck Darden of Goldsboro, Jason Carpenter of Georgia; Niece: Lisa Phillips of Georgia
We would like to thank Helping Hands and the wonderful ladies and gentlemen who cared for Papa in his later years and Gentiva Hospice for their care.
Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Brock Family.
