FREMONT, N.C. — Motorists traveling in northern Wayne County will need to plan for a detour after a bridge on Davis Mill Road was closed this week for a replacement project.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the 51-year-old bridge over Aycock Swamp has been closed so contractors can demolish the aging structure and construct a new, modern bridge.
The bridge is located on Davis Mill Road, roughly halfway between Goldsboro and Wilson.
During construction, a signed detour will direct traffic along Black Creek Road and Turner Swamp Road. Drivers should expect longer travel times and use extra caution while traveling near the construction zone.
The replacement project is designed to improve the safety and reliability of the crossing for years to come.
NCDOT expects the new bridge to be completed and Davis Mill Road to reopen in February 2027, weather permitting.
Motorists are encouraged to follow posted detour signs and allow additional travel time while the project is underway.
