RALEIGH, N.C. — Young artists across Wayne County and North Carolina are invited to showcase their creativity and celebrate the state’s aviation history as the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) opens submissions for the 2027 Aviation Art Contest.
Hosted annually by the NCDOT Division of Aviation, the statewide competition encourages students to explore the world of aviation through art.
This year’s theme, “Forever First in Flight,” celebrates North Carolina’s rich aviation history and its legacy of innovation in flight.
“This contest has always been a great opportunity to inspire students to be creative and learn something new about aviation,” said NCDOT Division of Aviation Director Nick Short. “We are excited to be hosting a statewide competition for our North Carolina youth.”
Since the contest began in 2013, more than 13,000 students representing over 825 North Carolina schools have participated.
Students born between Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2020, are eligible to enter. The competition features three age categories:
- Junior: Born between Jan. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2020.
- Intermediate: Born between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2016.
- Senior: Born between Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2012.
Winners and their schools will receive cash prizes provided by the North Carolina Airports Association.
Unlike previous years, the 2027 contest will be limited to statewide competition, with winning entries not advancing to national or international competitions.
Wayne County students interested in aviation, art, or both are encouraged to participate and share their interpretations of North Carolina’s aviation legacy.
Students, parents, and educators can find additional information about eligibility, submission requirements, and contest details by visiting the NCDOT Aviation Art Contest website.
