RALEIGH, NC – The North Carolina Department of Transportation is preparing to roll out a redesigned version of its long-running traveler information website, DriveNC.gov, offering new tools and features aimed at improving real-time traffic updates for motorists across the state.
Beginning May 27, visitors to the site will see a refreshed map, updated navigation tools, and new capabilities designed to make it easier to track road conditions and traffic disruptions.
Among the new features, users will be able to sign up for customized email alerts for traffic disruptions along specific routes or in selected areas, view messages currently displayed on overhead highway signs, and watch live video feeds from more than 1,100 traffic cameras statewide.
For the first time, travelers will also be able to download a free mobile app called “DriveNC” for both iPhone and Android devices.
When the updated site launches, users can click the “New Features” tab in the top navigation bar to access tutorials explaining how to use the new system.
The platform replacing the current system represents the first major overhaul since the original DriveNC.gov was created following the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
“For more than 25 years, our current system has reliably served travelers across North Carolina,” said Kelly Wells, a traveler information engineer with NCDOT’s Traffic Systems Operations Unit. “This new platform will provide even greater capabilities to support our travelers and our partners.”
According to NCDOT, more than 34,000 incidents — including crashes, road closures, maintenance projects, and storm-related impacts — were logged into the system in 2025 alone. Nearly 1.4 million people used DriveNC.gov last year, accounting for approximately 2.2 million website visits.
The agency said the automatic sharing of traffic alerts with navigation services such as Waze, Google Maps, and Apple Maps will continue under the upgraded system.
Media outlets and other users who currently receive automated email alerts will need to resubscribe under the new platform.
