MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The University of Mount Olive women’s volleyball team made a strong statement in its home opener Tuesday evening, sweeping Virginia Union University 3-0 inside Kornegay Arena.
The Trojans controlled the match from start to finish, winning by set scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-18 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Kaitlyn Koel and Olivia Melvin powered the Mount Olive attack with 10 kills apiece. Melvin finished with a .412 hitting percentage, while Koel contributed two service aces and four block assists.
Lyndsay Reid directed the Trojan offense with 27 assists and delivered a match-high five service aces.
Danielle Parker added five kills and four block assists, while Marleigh Cooper was a force from the service line, recording seven aces in the victory.
Mount Olive finished the night with 38 kills and a .299 hitting percentage. The Trojans also kept Virginia Union under pressure with 18 service aces while totaling 16 block assists at the net.
The Trojans now turn their attention to a busy Friday at Kornegay Arena as they host the Pickle Invitational on Sept. 4.
Mount Olive will open tournament play against Georgia College at 11 a.m. before returning to the court to face Coker at 5 p.m.
