GOLDSBORO, NC – The Goldsboro City Council recognized the longstanding contributions of Dillard Goldsboro Alumni and Friends Incorporated during Monday night’s meeting, issuing a proclamation ahead of the organization’s 71st annual homecoming celebration scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
The proclamation highlighted the historic legacy of Dillard High School, which originated from a private school founded in 1866 for Black students and became a cornerstone of education within the Black community in Goldsboro.
City leaders praised Dillard Goldsboro Alumni and Friends Incorporated for its ongoing mission to preserve the history and legacy of both Dillard High School and Goldsboro High School while also creating educational opportunities for local students.
Council members specifically recognized the organization’s National Scholarship Committee, which awards scholarships annually to area high school students pursuing higher education.
The organization’s 71st annual homecoming celebration will take place from May 21-24 and will include several events honoring alumni and the schools’ shared history.
During remarks following the proclamation, organization leaders thanked the city and community for decades of support and invited residents to attend the scholarship awards program at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dillard Middle School. Organizers said they expect to award a record amount of scholarships to a record number of students this year.
Residents were also encouraged to attend the homecoming parade scheduled for Saturday morning.
Leaders of the organization said the continued support from the community helps ensure future generations of students can succeed through education, scholarship and service.
