Wayne County, N.C. — Residents in Wayne County can once again conduct outdoor burning after local officials lifted the countywide burn ban, aligning with the state’s decision to ease restrictions in most areas.
The North Carolina Forest Service officially lifted its statewide burn ban for 81 counties effective 8 a.m. Sunday, May 3, following recent rainfall that helped reduce wildfire risk. Wayne County leaders have now followed suit, removing the local ban that had been in place since April.
The original statewide ban, issued March 28, came in response to hazardous fire conditions fueled by dry weather and increased wildfire activity. While the situation has improved, officials warn that risks remain.
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said the decision reflects some progress, but not a complete recovery from drought conditions.
“The recent rainfall has provided some relief and has moderated fire danger enough for us to lift the ban on open burning in 81 counties,” Troxler said. “However, we’re still in the thick of spring wildfire season when conditions can change quickly.”
With the ban lifted, Wayne County residents can now apply for burn permits, which are required for most outdoor burning. Permits can be obtained through authorized agents or online via the state system. Officials note that any permits issued before the March ban are no longer valid and must be reissued.
Even with restrictions lifted, safety remains a top priority. Residents are urged to burn responsibly by keeping a water source and tools nearby, never leaving fires unattended, and avoiding burning during windy or dry conditions. Additional rules still apply for fires within 100 feet of an occupied structure, where local fire officials maintain authority.
State officials also emphasize that parts of North Carolina remain under a burn ban, particularly in areas that have received less rainfall.
Wayne County emergency officials say lifting the ban is a positive step but are urging residents to remain cautious as dry conditions can quickly return.
