April 21, 2026, 75, Kenly – Joseph Gideon Poythress, Jr., 75, passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 surrounded by his family. Born in Greene County on December 23, 1950, he was the son of the late Joseph Poythress, Sr. and Alice Hamm Poythress.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne Poythress, RJ Poythress, and Doug Poythress.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Velma Creech Poythress; children, Mark Poythress and wife Lori, and Valerie Moss and husband, Terry; grandchildren, Kayla Marlowe and husband, Joe, Heather Speelman and husband, Daniel, Christopher Gardner, Amber Williams and fiancé, Brandon Webb, and Samantha Harrell and husband, Chris; great-granddaughter, Leah; and brother, Jimmy Poythress. Joseph is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Joseph was a faithful and dedicated member of Wilson Gospel Assembly, where he ministered and served in many capacities throughout the years. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer a kind word, or step in wherever he was needed. His church was not just a place of worship, but a family he deeply loved and faithfully supported. He had a profound love for gospel music. Gospel music brought him great joy and served as a testament to his faith.
Joseph’s presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, the faith he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
A service to celebrate Joseph’s life will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Kenly Funeral Service. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Interment services will follow at Upper Black Creek Church Cemetery.
