Trojans Dominate Home Opener with 36–6 Victory Over Ferrum

MOUNT OLIVE — The University of Mount Olive wrestling team left no doubt in its home debut Thursday night, cruising to a commanding 36–6 win over Ferrum College inside Kornegay Arena.

The Trojans opened the dual with fire and never let up. Senior Jack MacKiernan set the tone at 184 pounds, pinning Joseph Toner in 6:33 to put UMO on the board first. Freshman Nicholas Mascolino followed with a dominant 16–0 technical fall at 197 pounds, quickly extending the lead to 11–0.

At heavyweight, freshman John Domencic continued the push with a 19–4 tech fall to make it 16–0 before the match rolled to the lightweights. Redshirt junior Christian Decatur delivered yet another technical fall at 125 pounds, widening the gap to 21–0.

Ferrum broke through at 133 pounds with a narrow decision win, but UMO wasted no time responding. Freshman Benjamin Hernandez earned a 20–4 tech fall at 141 pounds, followed later by victories from Hunter Newell (157) and Christian Orozco (165) as the Trojans kept the pressure on.

The night ended on a high note with redshirt junior Cole Hivnor securing a 10–0 technical fall at 174 pounds, capping the impressive dual and sealing UMO’s first home victory of the season.

Team Momentum Building Early

With five technical falls and a pin, UMO displayed its depth, strength, and ability to close out matches across the lineup — an encouraging sign as Conference Carolinas action continues.

The Trojans will now look to carry that momentum into their next competition as they continue pursuit of a strong season on the mats.
